Electrical Terms Explained
This page explains some common electrical safety devices in simple terms. Click any heading to learn what it means and why it matters in your home or business.
RCD β Residual Current Device
An RCD quickly cuts off power if it detects electricity flowing down the wrong path (like through a person), helping to prevent electric shocks. It constantly monitors the electrical current and reacts in milliseconds.
SPD β Surge Protection Device
An SPD protects your electrical system and appliances from voltage spikes caused by things like lightning or power surges. It diverts the excess voltage safely to earth before it can damage your equipment.
AFDD β Arc Fault Detection Device
An AFDD detects electrical arcs caused by loose or damaged wiring β the kind of fault that can lead to fires. When it detects a problem, it shuts off power to the affected circuit.
MCB β Miniature Circuit Breaker
An MCB is like a resettable fuse. It protects individual circuits by switching off automatically when thereβs an overload or short circuit.
EICR β Electrical Installation Condition Report
A formal report that checks the safety and condition of your electrical installation. It identifies issues like wear, damage, or non-compliance and helps ensure your property remains safe and legally compliant.
